Sony 84-inch 4K TV priced for Australia: AU$24,999

Sony's Ultra High Definition television is available for pre-order from today, with delivery guaranteed before Christmas.

Sony's 84-inch 4K TV will cost AU$24,999.
(Credit: Sony)

Despite having officially launched the 4K Bravia TV some weeks ago, Sony held off on announcing the pricing until today.

The 84-inch TV will retail for AU$24,999, and is available to pre-order from today, with Sony guaranteeing delivery before Christmas.

The pricing puts it well above the other 84-inch Ultra HDTV on the market, the LG 3D Ultra-Definition TV, which is selling for AU$15,999. However, it is the exact price that the Bravia is selling for in the US ? Sony normally does not match pricing from the US to Australia, with Aussies instead usually receiving a mark-up.

Despite the Consumer Electronics Association recently deciding that 4K resolution will be termed Ultra High Definition, Sony has elected to keep the term 4K for its product.

You can experience Sony's 84-inch TV at select Sony experience centres around the country.

Daily Kos: Michigan Enviros - Elect Kelley, Johnson & McCormack to ...

Dear Michigan Environmentalist:

Notwithstanding all of the other very important matters in the election,
Michigan enviros must also focus on their important votes in the election
for 3 seats on the Michigan Supreme Court. ?

I urge all Michigan voters to elect Judges Connie Marie Kelley & Shelia Johnson
and Professor Bridget Mary McCormack for the three seats up for
election to the Michigan Supreme Court.

Kelley and McCormack are up for 2 full term seats against 5 other competitors,
including current SC Judge Stephen Markman (an Engler era product)
and his philosophical sidekick, Circuit Judge Colleen O'Brien.

Judge Johnson is running for the partial term seat opposite Snyder appointee,
SC Judge Brian Zahra.

Here are some web sites for information on Kelley, Johnson and McCormack:

http://www.mccormackforjustice.com/...

http://conniekelleyforjustice.com/...

http://www.judgesheliajohnson.com/...

Markman and Zahra are part of the current extremist, right-wing 4 vote Federalist
Society gangbanger cabal on the Michigan Supreme Court. ? Markman, Zahra and O'Brien are running a partially coordinated campaign featuring the three together. ?

This afternoon I received one of Colleen O'Brien's robocalls where she is appealing
for votes from "Democratic voters".....i.e. ? her robocall leaves an erroneous impression
letting you think that she is a Democrat when she has actually been nominated by the
Michigan Republican Party.

Here is some more generally stated information about the consequences of current Federalist Society gang/cult activity at the Michigan Supreme Court:

http://papers.ssrn.com/...

http://tcattorney.typepad.com/...

Michigan citizens made an important decision to control Michigan Supreme Court gang activity with the year 2008 defeat of Federalist Society soldier and former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Clifford Taylor.

As to environmental case decisions, and how Judges Stephen Markman and
Brian Zahra have voted, the Michigan League of Conservation Voters has
published a very detailed and well researched/documented compilation of votes
at this site....don't forget to click on each judge to see each of the individual
decisions and how they voted:

http://www.michiganlcv.org/...

Zahra's record is limited because of his time on the SC. ? However, his single
negative decision on a Michigan Environmental Protection Act case involving
the clear statutory requirements contained in that law a right to allow appeal of permits under MEPA and Zahra's decision denying such a right is more than sufficient grounds to remove him from the Michigan Supreme Court:

http://www.michiganlcv.org/...

Markman's negative record on the court is more extensive, but his decision in
just the MEPA decision cases alone justify his removal from the court, as it justified Cliff Taylor's elective defeat judicial defrocking.

http://www.michiganlcv.org/...

As for O'Brien, take a look at her campaign endorsements and contributors
here to see what kind of justice they are after:

http://www.colleenobrien.org/...

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THE NON-PARTISAN SECTION OF YOUR BALLOT!!

Silicon Valley Telecom Entrepreneurs Pivot: New Business Models ...

Editor?s note: Steve Patterson?s observations and writing are based on his 20 years working in the primordial ooze of start-ups in Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated from Boston College with a degree in Mathematics. A contributor to organizations such as Network World, MHT, Byte and RH he is interested in the convergence of mobile and cloud.

Silicon Valley leads the nation with more than 50 percent?of telecom venture investments, and its share is growing. The reason for this is that companies such as Google, Apple, VMware and Salesforce have redefined the meaning of the telecom carriers business to include Internet, mobile and cloud with wireless, terrestrial and satellite transmission of voice and data.

In turn Silicon Valley telecom entrepreneurs have pivoted from capital-intensive hardware infrastructure with expensive and long telecom carrier sales cycles to less capital-intensive, software-based products and services with shorter telecom carrier sales cycles.

The top 10 quarterly telecom venture investments in Silicon Valley reported for the second and third quarters of 2012 by PricewaterhouseCoopers Moneytree?demonstrate this change in product orientation. The new business models are usually based on services that can be hosted on standard data center server hardware and software stacks and delivered to enterprises and consumers by carriers through Internet-leveraged sales campaigns. Nicira Networks, a software-defined network infrastructure company recently acquired by VMware for $1.2 billion, is an example of this new model.

Beyond attracting venture capital, the concentration of innovation has also attracted carriers to Silicon Valley. AT&T, Sprint, China Mobile, France Telecom/Orange and Swisscom are representative of the many large and small American and international carriers that have offices in Silicon Valley. All share the common goal to accelerate R&D and product delivery cycles with innovation acquired from startups.

Carriers are struggling for relevancy because their brand identities are often diluted by the likes of Apple, Google, YouTube or other apps or services that are consumed by individual and commercial customers of the underlying carrier telecommunications services. If they succumb to the struggle, carriers will be destined to a future of commodity competition for the lowest cost mobile and Internet data services.

Carriers, like venture capitalists, are risk-averse to investing in or buying from telecom hardware infrastructure startups. But there are many startups that don?t present these risks because they deliver over-the-top services, network efficiency and consumer products and services without large capital commitments.

Examples of agile carriers Swisscom and Bouygues, as well as startups Devicescape and Ooyala, illustrate how startups can quickly win revenues and investments from carriers seeking innovation.

Ursula Oesterle, vice president of innovation at Swisscom (Palo Alto), draws an insightful distinction about risk and return. ?The lifecycle of infrastructure and services is very different. Services that run over-the-top of our networks can be quickly prototyped and co-created with innovative companies with less risk and smaller investment compared to infrastructure. We are able to increase Swisscom?s return on R&D investment and shorten time to market by actively seeking, discovering and working with small innovative Silicon Valley companies.?

Ooyala (Mountain View) delivers video streaming and analytics that power video that is personalized for every viewer, location and device. Confirming the opinion of Swisscom?s Oesterle, Ooyala?s CEO Jay Fulcher reported that ?Australian carrier Telstra licensed Ooyala video platform within 8 weeks of first meeting because the investment and risk of a service is limited and because of Telstra?s imperative to accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship by leveraging start-up R&D.? Telstra also led Ooyala?s recent $35 million round. Telstra?s deployment and investment commitments speak to the commercial importance of start-up innovation within a large carrier.

Devicescape Software (San Bruno, Calif.) CEO Dave Fraser says carrier adoption cycles have become consumerized. ?Carriers selling cloud apps, consumer products and services, and serving advertisements have to be much more nimble and innovate faster.??Devicescape rolls together millions of distinct, free amenity-based Wi-Fi networks to offload mobile carriers? 3G and 4G networks to save them money. The company initially focused on tier-2 mobile carriers, such as U.S. Cellular and MetroPCS. ?This type of smaller carrier by necessity has more experience leveraging its own R&D budget with start-up innovation and adopting disruptive technology more quickly,? explained Fraser. Devicescape?s first sale took about a year. Since then Fraser has found that ?carriers are beginning to act on imperfect information where risk is manageable.?

French mobile carrier Bouygues reached agreement with Devicescape in only six weeks.?Stephane Allaire, who heads the Silicon Valley office of French carrier Bouygues Telecom, sponsored Devicescape?s deployment. Allaire believes that ?taking smart risks with startups is a great source of innovation.?Allaire, who has sourced 15 Silicon Valley innovation relationships, thinks that ?we have to take risks with small companies to go faster, and we can work with much smaller companies earlier in development than Devicescape when innovation presents itself.?

Sharing perspectives gained from organizing more than 150 meetings and events between carriers and startup innovators, Liz Kerton, president of the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley, said, ?In recent years our membership of new and returning carrier sponsors has increased, as has carrier search for external innovation from startups.?

Silicon Valley is an advantage to telecom entrepreneurs: Their close proximity to Internet, mobile and cloud leaders gives them a unique product-development perspective and greater access to capital. Close proximity to innovation-hungry carriers with an interest in buying and/or investing in startups improves the likelihood of a telecom startup?s success.

Vineyard Food Company's Affordable Dining Options | Maui Now

Vanessa Wolf is a former head chef, previously working in Portland, Oregon.?She offers her blunt assessments in the interests of honesty and improving Maui?s culinary scene.

By Vanessa Wolf

If you?re headed to Wailuku for First Friday tonight and dreaming of a four-course meal on a budget, consider? a stop at Vineyard Food Company on (imagine that) Vineyard Street.

This little restaurant is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. ? 2 p.m. They also offer a four-course dinner for $25 on First Fridays?and sometimes other Fridays as well. (You may want to call ahead to discern whether or not that?s the case on any Friday that isn?t the first one.)

Tonight?s menu features a baked artichoke and cheese dip served with croustades, a seared ahi salad, and a choice of Kalua pork, chicken katsu, or teriyaki ginger-glazed mahi mahi all served with macaroni salad and white rice. The meal is finished with a piece of pumpkin pie.

Dainty eaters or those on a more limited budget can also enjoy many of the items a la carte for a similarly reasonable price ($8.50 for the salad, $9.60 for the entrees)

The Mahi Mahi with a side of tortellini salad. Photo by Vanessa Wolf

Lunch, as mentioned, is served Monday through Friday and a new menu is offered each week. Prices are notably low, but there is a reason for that.

Vineyard Food Company doubles as ?Catering From Soup to Nuts, Inc.? and more or less that?s what you can expect: catered food in a sit-down restaurant setting.

The lunch menu offers a variety of different salads each week. The first are something akin to what you might find in a supermarket deli counter: quinoa, potato, tortellini or cole slaw. They are available in small and large portions for $4.50 and $6.50, respectively.

The large portions are indeed, large. A few weeks back Vineyard was offering a curried rice salad with apples, raisin, celery, rice, carrots, and mango. The vegan dish was at once sweet, savory, and satisfying. Served cold, the portion was more than could be finished in one sitting. Not bad for $6.50.

The large deli case at Vineyard Food Company. Photo by Vanessa Wolf

On another occasion, we sampled the Cheese Tortellini with assorted vegetables and pesto dressing. Mixed with the tortellini were cherry tomatoes, onions, artichoke heart, green bean, asparagus, red bell pepper, and carrots. This was also a cold salad ? likely premade a day or two before ? but still had good flavor and value for the price.

The Sour Cream Potato/Egg salad was less successful, perhaps because the skins were left on the potatoes themselves. Arguably a matter of taste, this is not our preference. Again, thoughts of a supermarket deli counter came to mind,? as it was more or less a typical potato salad: not bad, but nothing special.

But it?s not all cold pasta and rice salads. Vineyard Food Company also offers a soup of the day, a variety of green salads, and sandwiches. Regulars include the CS2N Salad ($8.50) with greens, crumbled goat cheese, mandarin oranges, Maui onions, and candied pecans and the Vineyard Burger ($9.50): eight ounces of Maui beef on an onion roll.

In addition to food, almost all the art at Vineyard Food Company is done by local artists ? like this piece by ?Jungle John? Korpi ? and for sale. Photo by Vanessa Wolf

Be aware, however, that many things sell out by Friday. Come earlier in the week or expect slim pickings.

The Tuna Melt ($9.50) was served warm-ish. Somehow the tuna was cold but had a layer of melted cheese (how?d they manage that?), and the bread gave the appearance of having been in a Panini maker, but was cool to the touch.

The somewhat plain tuna salad ? notable only for a scattering of capers ? also came with tomato slices, lettuce, and several thick chunks of onion. The sandwich was served with a handful of potato chips. Although nothing earth-shattering, it was a solid sandwich made better by the fair price tag and clean, sunny ambience.

We also sampled the Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi with Mango/Papaya Fruit Salad ($9.60). It offered a good size portion of well-prepared fish. Although a bit under-seasoned, the interesting salad of ? what seemed to be, despite the description ? pineapple, cantaloupe, green onion, red bell pepper all but made up for it.

The Tuna Melt. Photo by Vanessa Wolf

Again, the food had clearly been pre-made and reheated. It is what it is.

Go in with related expectations and hopes of having a quick and affordable lunch or dinner in a bright and cheery setting, and you?re likely to leave satisfied.

We welcome your feedback. Please let us know if you hear of any new?restaurants opening or reopening, total menu overhauls, or simply know of a hidden treasure you want to share. Have a restaurant you want reviewed (or re-reviewed)? Drop us a line.

Dying to know how a certain dish is made so you can recreate it at home? Send in a request, and we will try to pry the secret out of the chef?and even take a run at cooking it up ourselves. Mahalo. -vanessa(@mauinow.com)

Antiaging | I Wanna Be Forever Young. Should I Start Using ...

i?ve used sunscreen with the highest spf since i was 13, because im really concern about premature aging.im 20 y.old now, and shoul i start using antiaging product?what is the best antiaging product on the market?i know chanel has age-delay. is that any good?

Have lots of sex!!

YES the sooner the better? use for sure s moisturezer that is spf 15 you will not regret!

Forever young? hhmm.. perhaps it would be good to invest in some common sense than in an anti-aging product.

Nobody stays ?forever young?.

Moisturize, eat healthy, drink adequate amounts of water, and embrace the fact that there are cycles to life:

infant, toddler, adolescent, young, not-so-young, middle aged, and aged.

All these will occur no matter how much you fret over them.

Use Vit E OIL everyday eat one and also use it on your face. It is yucky but hey it keeps your skin young looking as well as helps in side.

Tie hair back,Use warm cloth to open pores, apply Vit E relax for a few hours or over night then cool rinse. Do this at least one time a week. Been doing this since i was 18 and everyone at church think my youngest son is my Brother or boy friend or husband? so they all say. My pastor had to call me up front to straighten it all out. I am 45 he is 23

Go figure. You can?t stay young forever but you can look young longer?

Find the Fountain of Youth, then come back to tell the rest of us.

meanwhile use SPF products, eat healthy, exercise regularly, and be happy?happiness reduces stress, therefore, reduces wrinkle lines :p

I teach skin care with Mary Kay and most people start around 22 I understand in Europe they start at 14. I am glad to hear you use sunscreen it is real important also get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water. A good skin care routine is important you want to cleans exfoliate and tone and moisturize the skin twice a day. make sure you are using oil free products.

If you would like free samples of Mary Kay email me.

A Great Chef's Knife Is Your Slicing-and-Dicing Deal of the Day

We here at Dealzmodo see “bargains” or “deals” for knife sets all the time (think “25 knives for $25—but that’s not all folks!”) but we never post them because they’re not really bargains: you don’t need all those knives, and if they’re that cheap they’re probably crap. What you do need is a great chef’s knife, and Amazon’s got the 10-inch Victorinox Fibrox on sale for only $24 today. Michael Zhao,?over on The Wirecutter, called it “a great chef’s knife,” and Lifehacker’s Adam Pash noted that “it performs like a $100+ knife for much less.” And today, it’s an even better bargain than when those guys reviewed it: $24 is a straight-up steal for such a great Swiss-made piece of German steel. [Amazon]

If you’ve already got a Wustof or another awesome knife, check out after the jump for deals on console video games (including pre-orders and new releases!), Alienware gaming desktops, and a $10 Netflix streamer.

U.S. government tries to get fuel to storm-hit Northeast

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Friday sought to ease the fuel crunch that hit the Northeast after Hurricane Sandy, saying it would provide emergency responders with diesel from national reserves, and also allowing foreign tankers in the Gulf of Mexico to bring fuel to the region.

The Department of Homeland Security waived the Jones Act, a law that normally prohibits foreign-flagged vessels from shipping gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products, from the Gulf of Mexico to Northeastern ports. The waiver, effective immediately, requires shipments to leave the Gulf region by November 13 and arrive in the Northeast within a week.

With power still out at many ports and gasoline stations it was unclear how much fuel was needed immediately and how quickly it could get to customers.

The Energy Department also announced that it was tapping the Northeast Heating Reserve for the first time, releasing about 48,000 barrels of ultra-low sulfur diesel for the Defense Department to distribute to local and federal responders in New York and New Jersey.

The fuel will be used to supply emergency equipment, generators, buildings, trucks and other vehicles.

The Defense Department will begin drawing down as soon as Saturday from the reserve, created in 2000, which holds about a million barrels of diesel.

ONE WAIVER REQUESTED

Homeland Security said it had received only one request from a company, which it did not identify, to waive the Jones Act.

The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, better known as the Jones Act, was created to support jobs in the maritime industry. It requires goods moved between U.S. ports to be carried by ships built domestically and staffed by U.S. crews.

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP), a domestic maritime industry group, said it was not aware of any cases where U.S. vessels had not been available to transport fuel, but it supported waivers in the aftermath of the massive storm.

"We will not oppose waivers that are necessary to facilitate delivery of petroleum products into the regions affected by Hurricane Sandy," AMP said in a letter to President Barack Obama and heads of several government departments.

Benchmark New York Harbor gasoline futures dropped 5 cents, or 2 percent, on news of the waivers, which could allow shippers to divert cargoes enroute to Europe or Latin America to the depleted Northeast market.

NO URGENT NEED?

Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told reporters several government agencies were trying to figure out how many ships were available. He said the Energy Department held a conference call with major suppliers.

"We're working ... on which ships can be potentially diverted to New York," Fugate said.

Shipping sources said the slow return of power to ports in the New York Harbor had them considering delivering fuel to nearby cities such as Boston.

Energy experts said the waiver might not bring immediate relief to fuel-strapped New York and New Jersey, where two refineries were shut by Sandy. But, in the longer term, shipping alternatives could help ensure steady supply.

"There appears to be no urgent need at the moment" for a Jones Act waiver, said Bob McNally, head of Washington-based consulting firm the Rapidan Group. He said shortages so far have been at the retail level rather than the maritime import level.

David Goldwyn, who headed international energy affairs at the U.S. State Department until early 2011, said the waiver could boost the ability to deliver fuel to the East Coast now that tankers that were set to go to Europe or other destinations can dock there without restriction.

"The travel from Gulf Coast to the East Coast is pretty quick," said Goldwyn, who currently runs Goldwyn Global Strategies, an energy research and strategy company.

NFCC Financial Education Blog ? NFCC Counselor of the ...

By Gail Cunningham

Some would consider the job of credit counselor to be depressing. Not Liz Greenwood, the?NFCC?s 2012 Professional Achievement and Counseling Excellence (PACE) Outstanding Counselor of the Year.

Greenwood, a 35-year employee of NFCC Member Agency, Philadelphia-based Clarifi, is the first to arrive at work each morning, considering it an honor to help the consumers who seek her assistance with their financial concerns. She routinely takes on extra appointments, as she knows how critical it is to be responsive to those who are overwhelmed with financial distress. Her knowledge of the ever-evolving financial landscape has earned her the nickname of the ?Human Financial Literacy Search Engine.?

She admits that her personal passion is counseling, and couples her knowledge with an inherent knack for getting to the heart of a client?s financial issues. Taking a holistic view of a person?s financial life, she quickly grasps what demands immediate attention, while identifying symptoms of larger issues that need addressing. A key to her success is digging deep, asking all the right questions in an effort to determine which strategies will work best to meet the person?s short and long-term goals.

?Financial concerns can crush a person?s spirit,? said Greenwood. ?I?m honest with people so that they can do more than change their existing financial crisis. They can change their whole life.?

Liz eagerly volunteers to work off-site events, sharing her experience with struggling consumers at programs and financial forums in the communities that Clarifi?s nine offices serve. Whether at the individual or corporate level, Liz is a relationship-builder, working with both private and government entities to further financial education. As an example, she pioneered her agency?s partnership with the United Way of Burlington County, opening a Clarifi branch in the United Way office, thus allowing clients to access multiple crucial services all in one location.

It?s a very different world than the one in which Liz Greenwood began her credit counseling career, as today more than 60 percent of Clarifi?s appointments are related to housing. Undaunted by such changes, Liz feels that the housing crisis has provided her with just one more opportunity to help people. Recognizing her accomplishments, Greenwood was invited to participate in the 2012 White House Forum on Housing.

Eager to stay on top of current regulations and programs that would benefit her clients, Liz earned certification from NeighborWorks USA for advanced foreclosure prevention, homeownership preservation, and reverse mortgages, and took advanced training courses from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

?The entire Clarifi staff and board are extremely proud to have Liz Greenwood named as the NFCC 2012 Outstanding Counselor of the Year,? said Clarifi President Patty Hasson. ?Liz exceeds her clients? and co-workers? expectations every day with her abilities to understand an individual?s unique situation, to provide empathy and honesty, and advocate on their behalf to not only address immediate issues, but set up the habits and strategies that lead to long-term success.?

The NFCC is thankful to the many sponsors who have generously supported the 2012 PACE Awards: Bank of America, Chase, Citi, and Experian.

One of the oldest and most prevalent cultural practices across the globe, tattooing has become increasingly popular in the African-American community. Yet while this group has demonstrated a growing affinity for receiving tattoos, the number of licensed black artists practicing the profession is much smaller by comparison. Add gender to the mix, and the number dwindles even further.

?I want to believe there are more of us [women], but so far, there are very, very few,? African-American tattoo artist Imani K.?Brown, 32, told theGrio.??I know about two in Detroit. That?s it.?

Being a black tattoo professional has placed the artist in a strange caste. ?People think we?re on the darker side of life,? said Brown, referring to misconceptions about her line of work. ??That we?re all rockstars and worship the devil.?

Yet, Brown is a trained artist who hails from Washington D.C.?s Pinz-N-Needlez Tattoo, one of the few black-owned and operated shops in the country. To add further distinction, she is documented as only the second licensed black female tattoo artist in America. She recently learned of the first accredited black female artist, 66-year-old Jacci Gresham of New Orleans, upon watching the new documentary Color Outside The Lines, by black tattoo artist?Miya Bailey?and filmmaker Artemus Jenkins.?Brown is also featured in the film.

Black tattoo artists such as Brown continuously face discrimination and general ignorance of their history and presence in the predominantly white male profession. To counter this,?Color Outside the Lines?explores the small, yet rich African-American community of tattoo artists and piercers through one-on-one interviews throughout the country.

Misconceptions about her capabilities are not new to Brown. Although drawing has always been a passion for the former art student, it was a racial insult that prompted Brown to take her love for tattoos (of which she has at least 20) to the next level in 2005 by going pro.

?It wasn?t until a white dude, my tattoo artist at the time, told me he wouldn?t apprentice a black person, let alone a woman,? Brown recalled, ?[that I took] it seriously and decided to persue it with more meaning.?

After gaining her focus, the past seven years have seen Brown emerge as a reputable body artist in the industry known for her diverse portfolio and quirky love of Japanese pop culture. She recently took some time out of her packed scheduled to share her thoughts on tattooing dark skin, advising the public on the dangers of ?scratchers,? and the popular tattoo request she deplores.

theGrio: Some people believe tattooing a black person is either really difficult, or impossible. Have you heard this before within your industry?

Imani Brown: Of course! Mostly from white artists though. People get told that they can?t get color, [they can only get] red, or they?re too dark for a tattoo.?Usually, I just laugh and tell them to look at my portfolios.?It?s easier to let people see things on similar skin, than to try and explain it. They see that we?re specialists in black skin and they can decide for themselves from there.

Are there some designs or colors that turn out differently on black clients in terms of fading or loss of detail?

Well, black skin has a varying gradiation, more than other skin types. So of course there will be things that turn out better or worse. The trick with black skin is knowing where to stop, in terms of design and detail.?A very, very dark black person can?t?accommodate?for my fine lines like someone more ?caramel.? Meanwhile, someone ?caramel? with super dry skin can?t?accommodate?that style either past a certain size. For my fine line detail, there?s no telling the outcome. Things could bleed together, all types of blowouts. So it really depends on where people fall in that varying skin chart and also the condition of their skin for certain styles, at least.

Unlicensed tattoo artists are becoming more prevalent these days thanks to social media. What are your thoughts on these individuals?

They?re scratchers and they should either step their game up or stop dealing in skin. It?s not fair to those people whose skin they?re butchering.

Sony NEX-5R review: focusing and performance improvements make this cam a winner

DNP Sony NEX5R review focusing and performance improvements make this cam a winner

By some accounts, Sony botched the NEX-F3. Positioned as the successor to the fantastic C3, it replaced that camera's slim profile with a bulkier build, but sacrificed basic display tilt functionality in favor of a front-facing model. Image quality was fine, but focusing speeds fell short. Fortunately, the company has redeemed itself with the $750 NEX-5R. The mirrorless camera you'll read about today represents everything a successful update should: performance has been improved all around, the touchscreen tilts in every which way and the design has changed only for the better.

It's also the first Sony mirrorless cam to feature WiFi, along with the company's new PlayMemories Camera Apps. Wireless connectivity is undoubtedly becoming a popular addition in higher-end models, but that doesn't mean it's a feature users are demanding. With Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Camera, connectivity -- 4G in particular -- makes perfect sense, but how does that web experience transfer to a tiny 3-inch touchscreen? And does it detract from usability overall? Join us past the break for a closer look at this very capable 16.1-megapixel interchangeable lens camera.

Spears, Odom face test of live TV on 'X Factor'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Britney Spears was coolly composed on the first live episode of "The X Factor." The same can't be said for new host Khloe Kardashian Odom and her microphone.

Odom, adding to her reality TV credentials, was paired with Mario Lopez to emcee "X Factor" as the singing contest shifted Wednesday from taped to live broadcasts.

Lopez, host of "Extra," performed like the pro he is. Odom came across like the novice she is, shouting her lines despite the mic clutched in her hand and making awkward small talk with contestants and judge and executive producer Simon Cowell.

When Lopez teased 13-year-old singer Diamond White about having a boyfriend, the girl replied, "No, we're friends. My mom would kill me."

"Don't let your mom kill you," exclaimed Odom, drawing a confused smile from White.

At another point, Odom sounded like an oddly flirtatious schoolgirl as she introduced Cowell as "Mr. Sexy."

In a conference call Tuesday, Cowell had discussed expectations for his co-host, a member of reality TV's first family that includes sister Kim Kardashian. Odom's credits include "Khloe and Lamar" with husband Lamar Odom, a Los Angeles Clippers player.

She wants to "prove a point," Cowell said, noting observers had questioned Odom's readiness to steer a live program.

He warned that she would need "nerves of steel" Wednesday because she had less rehearsal time than planned.

"I kind of like to see the unpredictable and I quite like seeing people under pressure and just how they deal with it," Cowell said. Odom and Lopez replaced first-season host Steve Jones, a U.K. TV personality.

Cowell also expressed reservations about how Spears would manage.

While lauding her as "very, very good judge" so far, he told the teleconference it was unclear "what she's going to be like on a live show" involving competition between judges over the contestants they are mentoring.

Spears, a pop princess who has struggled in her personal life, including spells in rehab, proved up to the task. She heaped praise on singers and remained calm when criticism was leveled at those she's guiding.

When Cowell told one teenager that "we need to sort your vocals out," Spears shot back, "I disagree. I think you're a true star."

It was Cowell himself who committed the biggest flub of the night: He was bleeped for using what appeared to be British slang found questionable by Fox.

Of the 16 acts featured on the live "X Factor," four will be cut Thursday by Spears, Cowell, Antonio "L.A." Reid and Demi Lovato. Viewers will decide contestants' fates in following weeks.

Cowell took a moment at the start of Wednesday's show to express sympathy for Hurricane Sandy victims on the East Coast, saying, "our hearts are with you and we hope things get sorted out quickly."

An on-screen crawl invited viewers to donate to the American Red Cross.

Affiliated Managers 3Q earnings up nearly 37 pct.

BOSTON (AP) ? Asset manager Affiliated Managers Group Inc. said Wednesday its third-quarter earnings jumped nearly 37 percent, boosted by strong investment performance.

The company reported net income of $54.9 million, or $1.04 per share, in the July-September quarter, up from $40.1 million, or 76 cents per share, in the third quarter of 2011.

Third-quarter revenue rose 12.9 percent, to $467.3 million from $413.8 million a year earlier.

Excluding one-time costs, economic earnings per share were $1.91, up from $1.55 in last year's third quarter.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast earnings per share of $1.87 on revenue of $486.4 million, on average.

Economic earnings exclude some expenses, such as amortization and deferred taxes related to intangible assets. Affiliated Managers Group considers economic earnings a key measure of performance because it represents operating performance before certain expenses tied to acquisitions of interests in affiliated management firms.

The company, based in Prides Crossing, Mass., said net client cash flows for the latest quarter were $10.9 billion. Assets under management as of Sept. 30 were about $416 billion, up from around $385 billion at the end of June.

Affiliated Managers said it continues to benefit from demand from global institutional clients for emerging markets stocks and alternative investments, which generate about 70 percent of its earnings.

Shares of Affiliated Managers rose $1.31 to $125.45 in afternoon trading.

96% Argo

All Critics (205) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (196) | Rotten (9)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

Argo is among the worthiest spy thrillers to come out of Hollywood in years, and it puts to rest (at least for this reviewer) any doubts over Affleck's chops as a smart, shrewd director of consistently topnotch fare.

Argo will make you say "wow" not because of anything big and flashy but purely for its well-told story.

It's a reminder of what the movies can offer when they're at their best: an escape into another world and a pertinent look at our own.

As a director, Ben Affleck is getting into Alan Pakula territory.

Even when it embellishes certain details leading up to its climax, Affleck and his actors by that time have sold the audience on its authenticity. How appropriate.

I found it hard for me to get into at first, but the final act more than makes up for it. Ben Affleck sure has come a long way since his days with Kevin Smith.

It's exciting, it's funny, it's suspenseful. The ending is nail-biting.

This is a classy heist movie with a bizarre set-up; it's entertaining as well as thrilling.

A tense political thriller with a dash of Hollywood satire thrown in to sweeten the deal, this is a gripping crowd pleaser that is sure to take home some statuettes come Oscar season. Your move, Matt Damon.

The real Argo that's landing in cinemas now shouldn't be mistaken as anything other than a spellbinding, old-fashioned thriller. I've got sweaty palms and an elevated pulse to prove that it's one of the year's very best films.

A suspenseful, topical and surprisingly humorous film that's deserving of the Oscar buzz surrounding it.

The only real criticism, surprisingly, is Affleck. Perhaps the time has come to think about spending more time behind the camera rather than in front of it.

...incredibly entertaining, lucid crowd pleaser. I'm [annoyed] that people may hear the synopsis and go 'Oh, that's not my thing', because Argo is everyone's thing: it's one of the year's best films.

Its politics are subtle, its performances are good, and its script is amazing.

There's "creating an intense, claustrophobic situation in a foreign locale" and there's "inciting unquestioning fear of 'the other'," and Argo pulls off the former far more often than it accidentally achieves the latter.

An ingeniously conceived thriller that's almost as much about our collective love of cinema as it is a tricky international incident.

Suspenseful movie based on a true incident; Ben Affleck's stock rises as an actor and director.

It not only confirms Affleck as one of the few A-listers to have made a credible transition to behind the camera, but that he's one of the most exciting mainstream directors around, full stop.

Affleck's seamless melding of intense thrills in Tehran and biting humour in California makes for a wholly satisfying movie.

The use of dramatic licence in the finale is too obvious but aside, Argo is a solid dramatic thriller that is informative, entertaining and gripping.

Blaze devastates community built by NY firefighters

NBC's Matt Lauer reports on how Breezy Point and Rockaway also suffered deep losses in 9/11 and after a 2001 plane crash.

By Bob Sullivan

Breezy Point, in New York City's Queens borough, was built in part by New York City firefighters and their families in the early 1900s. A large section of it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, in part because firefighters couldn't get there.

The idyllic community of around 3,800 homes ? many wooden bungalows, packed tightly together ??sits on an isolated spit of land, connected to mainland New York City by two bridges. It enjoys both bayside and ocean views, a luxury that makes it a target for both New Yorkers and every large storm that roars ashore from the Atlantic. But it wasn't rain or wind that did in Breezy Point ? it was fire and logistics.

At the height of Sandy's fury late Monday, when a devastating blaze ignited in the heart of the community, firefighters were slowed by flooded roadways and other weather-related challenges, finally requiring help from the National Guard to get through. As they were working out an approach, flames fueled by massive winds jumped from home to home, consuming family histories along with the buildings holding them. By the time the blaze was contained, more than 100 homes ? and St. Genevieve's Catholic Church ? were destroyed, ripping the heart out of the community.

Breezy Point is sometimes called the Irish Riviera ??or by its Gaelic name Cois Farraige, which mean "By The Sea." Irish police and fire fighters looking for affordable seaside homes rushed to build in the area when transportation to and from the city became readily available just over a century ago. It has remained one of the most Irish enclaves in America, with more than half the residents claiming Irish heritage, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.?

Nicole Makridis, who lives in a ground-floor condominium in Breezy Point, across the street from Rockaway Beach, took this photo on Tuesday when she returned to assess the damage from Sandy. The dark band on the wall shows how high the floodwaters climbed in her unit.

"If you are interested in learning anything ? the bagpipes or the tin whistle or Irish dancing," Breezy Point is the place, Dolores Mulholland told the Irish Echo, a New York-based newspaper aimed at Irish immigrants, in a feature story on the neighborhood last year.

Even Frank McCourt, the famed chronicler of Irish-American life who wrote "Angela's Ashes," once lived there, but few outsiders have the chance. Property rarely comes up for sale, and when it does, buyers must come up with a 50 percent down payment required by co-op rules. The Breezy Point Cooperative, which governs the area, pays for its own security force, and is one of the rare spots in New York City where the fire department is still run by volunteers.?

They were no match for the record-breaking storm and fire that gutted the place early Tuesday morning. The blaze did not discriminate. Rep. Robert Turner, R-N.Y., who won a special election to replace disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner last year, lost his home in the blaze. So did state Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long.

In Breezy Point, Queens, Sandy's flood damage was compounded by a massive fire, and the devastation was compared to post-WWII Berlin. NBC News' Hoda Kotb reports.

Breezy Point was under mandatory evacuation orders when Sandy rolled in, so many residents spent Monday night watching terrified on television, or scanning the Internet, looking at distant images showing their beloved beach community engulfed by water and flames. They hoped friends and family got out in time, and hoped their homes could dodge the triple threat of wind, flood and fire. Few did.

This aerial photo shows burned-out homes in the Breezy Point section of the Queens borough New York after a fire on Oct. 30. The tiny beachfront neighborhood told to evacuate before Sandy hit New York burned down as it was inundated by floodwaters, transforming a quaint corner of the Rockaways into a smoke-filled debris field.

'I can see a fire from my house'
Max Countryman got an alarming text from his mother, Paula, in the early morning hours on Tuesday asking if there was a fire on Breezy Point. Paula and her partner had decided to ride the storm out, as she and Max had ridden out Hurricane Irene with little trouble last year.

"I can see a fire from my house," the text said.

Max had left his mother at her Bedford Avenue home only a day earlier, after scoring a ticket on one of the last pre-storm flights out of New York. Back home in San Francisco, after Paula's electricity, phone and Internet service went out, he had to rely on her texts, news reports and, finally, the Web.

Breezy Point, N.Y., home to 9/11 responders who lost their lives, suffered devastating losses as a result of Sandy. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

"I was just listening to the Fire Department scanner (online) all night," he said. "I listened to the progression of the fire, when it went from one alarm, to two, three, four, five, six alarms. ... It was horrible to listen to the traffic, hear another block is engulfed in flames, another block, and they just couldn't stop the progression."

He took to Twitter to ask for help, but soon learned there was no way for his mother to get off the island. At first, he was more concerned about flooding.

"I'm in contact with her. But there's probably not a lot to do but wait," he told one user. "There's a second floor and deck. And I suppose there's always the roof. But for now it's not that bad."?

But quickly, fire became the bigger worry.

"Breezy Point is in dire shape at the moment: between twelve and fifteen homes are on fire, a church is burning, and the FDNY is stuck," he wrote. A little later, he tweeted: "@FDNY what's the status on the 3-alarm in Breezy Point? My mom is stuck (on) Bedford Ave, fire is not too far away." Then, this, a moment later: ?"@FDNY ... What should people stuck on the point do as the fire approaches their homes?"

About the same time, Chelsea Taylor was sweating out the storm and fire from her home in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. For Taylor's family, Breezy Point has been like an extended family hotel for the past two decades. Her sister Nicole Makridis lives on Bayside Avenue; her aunt, uncle and their two kids live next door.

Courtesy Nicole Makridis

The boardwalk that used to grace Rockaway Beach washed across the street and ended up at the front door of Breezy Point resident Makridis and her neighbors.

"I was basically raised over in Breezy Point because of a beach club over there and it was absolutely beautiful," she said. "I've spent endless summers over there and a lot of my high school friends live over there."

Before Sandy?s landfall, Makridis had evacuated to Taylor's home, but the other family household stayed behind. Taylor found out during the night that parents and kids ??a 3-year-old and a 9-year-old ??were evacuated by boat, but she couldn't find out where.?
"(I) found out they were evacuated by boat to the clubhouse. I have no idea where that is though," she told NBCNews on Tuesday. "It was the 9-year-old's birthday on Saturday," she added.

The uncertainty and fear were felt by many others with roots in Breezy Point.

Chris Gavagan is a filmmaker living in Brooklyn who grew up on Breezy Point; his father and brother still live there. His father retreated to ride out Sandy in Brooklyn, but brother Rob stayed behind in Breezy Point. When Chris Gavagan discovered Max Countryman's tweets about this mother, the two shared notes and determined that Countryman's mother and Gavagan's brother were neighbors.

"My brother (we haven't heard from since 8p) lives about 100ft away. The Army is involved now," Gavagan said on Twitter, referring to the National Guard.?

Reading texts, monitoring fire scanner
Countryman never lost contact with his mother ?through the frightful night. While she couldn't place calls, text messages continued to work and her cellphone battery held out. He knew when her first floor filled with 4 feet of water. As the night wore on, he heard on the FDNY scanner activity that wind had blown the fire the opposite direction, away from his mother's house. Then, after the high tide waters receded, he figured she was out of immediate danger.

He still had no idea how to help her, however ? and his mother and her partner didn't know what to do next.?

"They were going to try to rent a car, or somehow get a car ??my mom's partner hadn't heard from her mom, so they want to go into Brooklyn and check on her," he recalled. "But it's probably impossible for them to leave the house."?

He reflected on his mother's decision to stay, and said it was complicated. Their first option was to evacuate, but the nearest family member's home ??in "Zone A" in Brooklyn ??was also under a mandatory evacuation order. The couple has two dogs and a bird, making evacuation to anywhere else challenging. Such potentially life-threatening calculations were not unusual. The Wall Street Journal reported that perhaps 60 percent of Breezy Point residents tried to ride out the storm there.

PhotoBlog:?Evacuations continue and residents take stock in destroyed Breezy Point

Nonetheless, as the weather began to clear on Tuesday, he wondered aloud why his mother wasn't getting more help leaving her badly damaged home.

"You'd think the National Guard would want to step in and evacuate, maybe make an attempt to get people out at dawn. But right now I don't know what they are going to do," he said.

Gavagan got good news, too, as he was able to make it to Breezy Point Tuesday to check on his brother in person.?

Chris Gavagan

Rob Gavagan and his father, Donald, assess the damage from superstorm Sandy in front of the elder Gavagan's Breezy Point home on Tuesday.

"(My brother) rode it out in a house where taking on water was the concern. He had a few feet (of water) in the house," he said.

Perhaps for the best, he said, brother Rob didn't know about the fire because he was too busy caring for their home.?

A picture Gavagan sent to NBC News shows his father and brother already cleaning up debris around the house, carrying away a sign that reads, "Beach Officially Closed." He was able to let Countryman know that he'd seen his mother's home.

"The sidewalks and areas around her house still have feet of water, but there is plenty of help now," he said. He also reported that the National Guard was on the scene, but didn't know if they were evacuating residents.

US Coast Guard via AFP - Getty Images

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

For others, relief was delayed and tempered by the loss of treasured memories.?

Chelsea Taylor was still waiting late Tuesday to hear where her uncle, aunt and their children ended up, assuming they were OK but worrying nonetheless. Her sister was able to make her way back to Breezy Point to get see the damage, but that did nothing to lighten her mood.

"Looking at the pictures my sister just showed me of her house is absolutely heartbreaking," she said. "Her whole house is completely flooded. "The flooding is unbearable. She lives on a floor level condo right across the street from the beach in Rockaway. ? The boardwalk from the beach also washed up to right in front of her door."

Lauren Pallini's family lives in a home on Breezy Point that was also flood damaged.?

She spent Tuesday scheming how to get into the neighborhood so she could see the damage for herself. NBC News connected with her on Twitter as she started the trip over from Brooklyn.?

"To Breezy now," she said. Then, in Twitterspeak, "#Soscared."

An hour later, she'd seen the destruction.

"There's no hope for my house. Can't stop crying. I literally lost everything," she wrote. "Everything is flooded and literally everything got wet so everything is ruined."

Dragon ship back on Earth after space station trip

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? An unmanned Dragon freighter carrying a stash of precious medical samples from the International Space Station parachuted into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday, completing the first official shipment under a billion-dollar contract with NASA.

The California-based SpaceX company successfully guided the Dragon down from orbit to a splashdown a few hundred miles off the Baja California coast.

"This historic mission signifies the restoration of America's ability to deliver and return critical space station cargo," Elon Musk, the billionaire founder and head of SpaceX, said in a statement.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden praised the "American ingenuity" that made the endeavor possible.

Several hours earlier, astronauts aboard the International Space Station used a giant robot arm to release the commercial cargo ship 255 miles up. SpaceX provided updates of the journey back to Earth via Twitter.

The supply ship brought back nearly 2,000 pounds of science experiments and old station equipment. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited cargo is nearly 500 frozen samples of blood and urine collected by station astronauts over the past year.

The Dragon is the only delivery ship capable of returning items, now that NASA's shuttles are retired to museums. Atlantis made the last shuttle haul to and from the station in July 2011.

SpaceX ? more formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? launched the capsule three weeks ago from Cape Canaveral, full of groceries, clothes and other station supplies. Ice cream as well as fresh apples were especially appreciated by the station residents, now back up to a full crew of six.

It's the second Dragon to return from the orbiting lab; the first mission in May was a flight demo. This flight is the first of 12 deliveries under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

"It was nice while she was on board," space station commander Sunita Williams said as the Dragon backed away. "We tamed her, took her home and, literally and figuratively, there's a piece of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

She added to the SpaceX flight controllers in Hawthorne, Calif.: "Congratulations Hawthorne and thank you for her."

The Dragon will be retrieved from the Pacific and loaded onto a 100-foot boat that will haul it to Los Angeles. From there, it will be transported to McGregor, Texas.

The medical samples will be removed as quickly as possible, and turned over to NASA within 48 hours of splashdown, according to SpaceX. Everything else will wait for unloading in McGregor.

A Russian supply ship, meanwhile, is set to blast off this week. It burns up upon descent, however, at mission's end. So do the cargo vessels provided by Europe and Japan.

SpaceX is working to transform its Dragon cargo craft into vessels that American astronauts could fly in another four or five years. Until SpaceX or another U.S. company is able to provide rides, NASA astronauts must rely on Russian rockets to get to and from the space station.
