Beaufort man charged with robbing Chinese restaurant

An 18-year-old Beaufort man has been arrested on charges of robbing a local Chinese restaurant in December.

Calvin White Jr. was charged with one count of strong armed robbery for allegedly holding up the China Town Restaurant on Boundary Street on Dec. 23, said Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy.

Clancy said White walked into the business and ordered food before going behind the restaurant's counter, where he opened the cash register and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. He was chased from the restaurant by an employee who then contacted authorities, Clancy said. No injuries were reported.

On Monday, officers were looking for White near the Quality Inn on Boundary Street after White was spotted entering a motel room. Officers found him hiding in the bathroom and arrested him without incident, Clancy said.

White also was charged with second-degree assault and battery for allegedly punching a man in the face during an argument in the parking lot of a Beaufort apartment complex. The charge was unrelated to the December robbery.

He was being held without bond Tuesday at the Beaufort County Detention Center, according to the jail log.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison on the robbery charge, according to state law.
