Jason Kenny sets new Olympic record in sprint ... - BBC World News

Team GB cyclist Jason Kenny has broken the Olympic record to progress to the next round of the men?s sprint event. Jason Kenny has got off to a flying start (Picture: PA) Kenny, who has already tasted gold in the team event, has earned a bye into the round of 16 as a result of his time of 9.713 ? the fastest of the session. Kenny?s technique was near perfect as he hardly got out of the saddle to get his gold medal surge off to the perfect start in the velodrome at the Olympic Park. His form goes some way to justify his selection for the event ahead of Britain?s most successful ever Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy. World champion Gregory Bauge of France finished second in a time 9.952 seconds, while Australian Shane Perkins was third fastest. Kenny won the team sprint alongside Hoy, who had previously held the Olympic record, and Philip Hindes. Kenny will be back in action in the 1/8 final at 4.35pm. Team GB?s Laura Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell will be hoping to finish in the medals in the women?s team pursuit event later today. PICTURES: Track cycling day 2
