WASHINGTON ? Four-star general-turned-CIA director David Petraeus almost resigned as Afghanistan war commander over President Barack Obama's decision to quickly draw down surge forces, according to a new insider's look at Petraeus' 37-year Army career.
Petraeus decided that resigning would be a "selfish, grandstanding move with huge political ramifications" and that now was "time to salute and carry on," according to a forthcoming biography.
Author and Petraeus confidante Paula Broadwell had extensive access to the general in Afghanistan and Washington for "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," due from Penguin Press in January. The Associated Press was given an advance copy.
The book traces Petraeus' career from West Point cadet to his command of two wars deemed unwinnable: Iraq and Afghanistan. Co-authored with The Washington Post's Vernon Loeb, the nearly 400-page book is part history lesson through Petraeus' eyes, part hagiography and part defense of the counterinsurgency strategy he applied in both wars.
Critics of counterinsurgency argue the strategy has not yet proved a success, with violence spiking in Iraq after the departure of U.S. troops, and Afghan local forces deemed ill-prepared to take over by the 2014 deadline.
The book unapologetically casts Petraeus in the hero's role, as in this description of the Afghanistan campaign: "There was a new strategic force released on Kabul: Petraeus' will."
Broadwell does acknowledge that Petraeus rubs some people the wrong way.
"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion," she writes. But she adds that "his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me."
The book also is peppered with Petraeus quotes that sound like olive branches meant to soothe Obama aides who feared Petraeus would challenge their boss for the White House.
"Petraeus tried to make clear that he and Obama were in synch," Broadwell writes of Petraeus' Senate testimony on the Afghan war.
The book describes Petraeus' frustration at still being labeled an outsider from the Obama administration, even as he retired from the military at Obama's request before taking the job last summer as the CIA's 20th director.
The book depicts Petraeus' rise at an unrelenting, near-superhuman pace. He starts his career as a fiercely competitive West Point cadet known as "Peaches," where he famously wooed the school superintendent's daughter, Holly Knowlton. He went on to command the 101st Airborne Division as part of the invasion of Iraq, then masterminded the rewrite of the Army and Marine Corps' counterinsurgency training manual before returning to command the surge in Baghdad. He was then appointed to head Central Command, overseeing the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as military affairs across much of the Gulf and the Mideast.
He accepted a cut in authority and pay to lead the Afghanistan war campaign when Gen. Stanley McChrystal was forced to resign after a Rolling Stone article that "scorched the general (McChrystal) and his aides, caricaturing them as testosterone-addled frat boys as they insulted Obama" and other officials, Broadwell writes.
She describes how Petraeus' first act was to lift McChrystal's restrictions on the use of force ? especially on airstrikes ? if civilians were nearby.
"There is no question about our commitment to reducing civilian loss of life," Petraeus told his staff. There was, however, "a clear moral imperative to make sure we are fully supporting our troops in combat."
Broadwell adds that the problem, according to Petraeus, was less McChrystal's order than how it was even more strictly re-interpreted by lower commanders.
In her account, Petraeus also faults McChrystal for overpromising and underdelivering in places like Taliban-riddled Marjah in the south, producing months of embarrassing headlines that hurt the war effort back in Washington.
But the book also includes Petraeus' own Rolling Stone-esque moment, when he was quoted badmouthing the White House in Bob Woodward's latest book, "Obama's Wars." A frustrated Petraeus is described as telling his inner circle, on a flight after a glass of wine, that "the administration was (expletive) with the wrong guy."
"Petraeus later expressed his displeasure to all of them for betraying his confidence," Broadwell wrote. "But he knew he was ultimately responsible for making the intemperate remark," a candid admission, through Broadwell, of his lapse in judgment.
He also concedes the Afghan war is not yet won.
"He had wanted to hand (Marine Corps Gen. John) Allen ... a war that had taken a decisive turn," Broadwell writes of what had been Petraeus' goal for his successor. "He knew that, despite the hard-fought progress, that wasn't yet the case."
Yet that admission also presents a get-out clause when combined with the book's account that he considered resigning over the rapid drawdown of troops, neatly removing Petraeus from responsibility if the war goes wrong.
And the account does nothing to puncture the mythology his troops built up around him, something an early mentor, retired Gen. Jack Galvin, told Petraeus to embrace.
"They want you to be bigger than you are, so they magnify you," Galvin said in an interview with Broadwell. "Live up to it all with the highest standards of integrity. You become part of a legend."
"All In" fits neatly into that.

To many Americans, and especially to those behind 30 Rock, Kim Jong-Il was a frightening nut job, a world leader to scoff over and laugh at.
But to thousands of thousands of Pyongyang residents, the man was a national hero, which is why they turned out in droves at Kim's funeral today, crying, screaming and pounding their chests despite frigid weather.
Kim, who died of a heart attack on December 17, lay inside a black hearse during the three-hour ceremony, as the vehicle was followed by dozens of cars and military trucks that drive past major monuments in the capital.
"Even the people, mountains, rivers and the sky are crying for our dear leader," one solider interviewed by North Korean state TV said at the event.
That's probably because the mountains, rivers and skies couldn't actually process that Kim Jong-Il was a manipulative, evil human being.

Robert Shiller, Yale economics professor and co-founder of the Case-Shiller Home Price Index, was on Bloomberg TV this afternoon to talk about his thoughts on the economy. Overall, Shiller remained skeptical about an economic recovery despite Consumer Confidence shooting above expectations this morning. He cited a historical trend of ups and downs and economic indicator numbers that are still too low to be optimistic. It was reported this morning that Shiller's Case-Shiller Home Price Index fell 3.4% year-over-year, coming in at lower than the expected 3.2% decrease.
Near the end, the interview segued from Shiller's thoughts on housing in the New York area to his thoughts on jobs in the New York area?in particular, Wall Street jobs. In a twist from the relatively negative outlook that has dominated discourse on the financial sphere, Shiller revealed that he had high expectations for Wall Street.? From Bloomberg:
"I'm bullish on finance for the long run... I think finance is a central technology. The U.S. is very good at this technology, just like it's good at information technology as well," he said.
"I recommend to my students that it's still a good time to go into finance?if not in the short run, in the longer run. New York has a lot of strength that will carry it forward for a long time."

In addition to photos, locations and comments, Facebook users will now be able to share interesting things they ?Digg? up.
Digg, a content sharing website, will join a handful of other companies by launching a social reader on Facebook this December.
When logged into both Facebook and Digg, users who activate the reader will share the headlines they are reading back to their Timeline and their friends? News Ticker.
Publications including The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Yahoo News, The Independent and The Guardian already have similar applications on Facebook, some since September.
With the new Digg social reader, users will post articles they are reading, view a history of what they read on their timeline and get recommendations on what to read, according to the Digg website.
The new reader is one of several ?frictionless? open-graph apps that share activity automatically from an external site to a user?s facebook page.
Other frictionless apps, which post that a user is ?watching,? ?reading? or ?listening to? include Spotify, Rhapsody, Netflix and Hulu, according to Facebook developers.
Jonathan Polson, a freshman at the University of Vermont says he does not use social apps on Facebook.
?People don?t need to know every little thing that I do on the internet,? Polson says.
Because the updates are posted automatically, users have raised questions about security.
?You will have control over what you share on Facebook by choosing whether to turn social sharing on or off, selecting what audience you share to and the ability to always edit your activity,? the Digg website states. ?You can also control your settings from your Activity Log on Facebook, where you can remove specific stories from your Timeline or hide them.?
Other companies report success with their Facebook readers.
Yahoo News stated, ?Since adding deep integration with Facebook?s Open Graph, more than 10 million users of the social network have activated the social news features, and Yahoo! News has seen a 600 percent increase in traffic from Facebook,? according to allfacebook.com

This diagram is these kinds of that it could identify the wires by wire numbers or colour coding. Wiring diagrams most important utilization is in troubleshoot procedures and repairing of electrical or digital circuits.
So, if you can find any difficulty or malfunction in any of this circuit, this schematic diagram identified as wiring diagram would display all the electrical parts along with the interconnecting wiring as colour coded www.webtrotteurs.net to mark the locale of difficulty.
Nevertheless, this diagram fails to indicate the terminals, connector points, and so forth, of this circuit. Suppose you need to scan it, then you certainly need to appreciate the hues in subsequent three hassle-free strategies.
To begin with, locate the resource of this electrical difficulty then refer towards the fix manual which is able to expose the troubleshooting strategies to find out which electrical component is harmed or malfunctioning.
The diagram depicts the hues of wire over the page precisely matching the colour inside auto. It will aid in tracing the wire again to its electricity resource, or on towards the upcoming electrical circuit. Symbols as granted over the wiring diagram could differ, but sometimes observe electrical expectations.
Inside a unusual circumstance, the wiring diagram may just be in black and white. In that circumstance, lines over the schematic end up crucial and it then designates what colour its. This may be depicted as "DRK GRN" for dim green or "YEL/BLK for the yellow wire along with a thin black stripe.

MADALLA, Nigeria ? At a Nigerian Catholic church where a terror attack killed 35 people on Christmas, women tried to clean the sanctuary ahead of Mass on Monday while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris.
Outside St. Theresa Catholic Church, crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack claimed by a radical Muslim sect and fearful that the group will target more churches.
Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ.
Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties. In the chaos after the bombing, Jataudarde said one mortally wounded man, cradling his shredded stomach, begged him for religious atonement.
"Father, pray for me, I will not survive," the man said, according to the priest.
At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.
On Christmas, attacks by the radical Muslim sect left 39 dead across Africa's most populous nation. A bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast.
After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.
"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."
Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.
This Christmas attack comes a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.
While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.
That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.
Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.
Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."
"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

Creating semiconductor structures for high-end optoelectronic devices just got easier, thanks to University of Illinois researchers.
The team developed a method to chemically etch patterned arrays in the semiconductor gallium arsenide, used in solar cells, lasers, light emitting diodes (LEDs), field effect transistors (FETs), capacitors and sensors. Led by electrical and computer engineering professor Xiuling Li, the researchers describe their technique in the journal Nano Letters.
A semiconductor's physical properties can vary depending on its structure, so semiconductor wafers are etched into structures that tune their electrical and optical properties and connectivity before they are assembled into chips.
Semiconductors are commonly etched with two techniques: "Wet" etching uses a chemical solution to erode the semiconductor in all directions, while "dry" etching uses a directed beam of ions to bombard the surface, carving out a directed pattern. Such patterns are required for high-aspect-ratio nanostructures, or tiny shapes that have a large ratio of height to width. High-aspect-ratio structures are essential to many high-end optoelectronic device applications.
While silicon is the most ubiquitous material in semiconductor devices, materials in the III-V (pronounced three-five) group are more efficient in optoelectronic applications, such as solar cells or lasers.
Unfortunately, these materials can be difficult to dry etch, as the high-energy ion blasts damage the semiconductor's surface. III-V semiconductors are especially susceptible to damage.
To address this problem, Li and her group turned to metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch), a wet-etching approach they had previously developed for silicon. Unlike other wet methods, MacEtch works in one direction, from the top down. It is faster and less expensive than many dry etch techniques, according to Li. Her group revisited the MacEtch technique, optimizing the chemical solution and reaction conditions for the III-V semiconductor gallium arsenide (GaAs).
The process has two steps. First, a thin film of metal is patterned on the GaAs surface. Then, the semiconductor with the metal pattern is immersed in the MacEtch chemical solution. The metal catalyzes the reaction so that only the areas touching metal are etched away, and high-aspect-ratio structures are formed as the metal sinks into the wafer. When the etching is done, the metal can be cleaned from the surface without damaging it.
"It is a big deal to be able to etch GaAs this way," Li said. "The realization of high-aspect-ratio III-V nanostructure arrays by wet etching can potentially transform the fabrication of semiconductor lasers where surface grating is currently fabricated by dry etching, which is expensive and causes surface damage."
To create metal film patterns on the GaAs surface, Li's team used a patterning technique pioneered by John Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Chair and a professor of materials science and engineering at the U. of I. Their research teams joined forces to optimize the method, called soft lithography, for chemical compatibility while protecting the GaAs surface. Soft lithography is applied to the whole semiconductor wafer, as opposed to small segments, creating patterns over large areas ? without expensive optical equipment.
"The combination of soft lithography and MacEtch make the perfect combination to produce large-area, high-aspect-ratio III-V nanostructures in a low-cost fashion," said Li, who is affiliated with the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I.
Next, the researchers hope to further optimize conditions for GaAs etching and establish parameters for MacEtch of other III-V semiconductors. Then, they hope to demonstrate device fabrication, including distributed Bragg reflector lasers and photonic crystals.
"MacEtch is a universal method as long as the right condition for deferential etching with and without metal can be found," Li said.

Every time a story like this about a massive particle physics project surfaces, my stomach turns. I am by no means anti-science; I did my undergrad in physics, and am a graduate student in engineering. It all just seems like a massive misappropriation of resources. One can blow the horn of scientific inquiry all day, but there are incredibly daunting and very real challenges facing the world today (e.g., energy, toxicology) that need the attention of intelligent people. We live in such a unique time in human existence, when we have this massive supply of cheap energy.
So do we have an energy problem or not?
Your inconsistency notwithstanding, you could pick something better to complain about than spending
trillions of dollars into understanding physical effects which will bear no consequence on the extreme challenges we will face in the very, very near future.
Try military spending [wikipedia.org], or even luxuries like cosmetics and perfumes [worldwatch.org]. Besides, I doubt anyone can say with certainty that those poorly-understood physical effects bear no consequence. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that such understanding could provide the keystone to overcoming the challenges you point out.

NEW YORK ?? The biggest trend in finales this year is ? ulp! ? child endangerment.
Shows from "Dexter" to "The Walking Dead" have made kids in danger the dramatic thrust of their finale storylines. "The Walking Dead" even killed a child ? not once but twice ? and had another suffer a ghastly, near-fatal shotgun wound to the gut.
FX's new "American Horror Story" didn't even wait for its finale to start dispatching kids, violently offing a pair of young twins in its first minutes.
Viewers will find out on Sunday's "Dexter" season finale whether Dexter's son, Harrison, will also perish at the altar of TV drama. Previews of the episode show bad guy Colin Hanks threatening to stab the toddler in the neck with a wooden sword.
Plenty of big movies roll out this week, including "War Horse," "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "We Bought a Zoo" and more.
No harm, of course, came to any actual children in the making of the shows. But whether harm could come to kids who watch them is an open question. (Assuming any parents are clueless enough to let their kids watch surefire nightmare-inducers.)
Many studies have linked violence on TV to actual aggression in children. But violence against children ? or at least so much of it at once ? is new territory.
Thou Shalt Not Kill a Child has long been one of the unspoken commandments of horror movies, to say nothing of TV shows. (Teenagers, especially sexually active ones, are fair game, as Wes Craven spelled out in 1996's "Scream.") Putting young people in danger is one of the cheapest ways to shock an audience ? but can also be a legitimate way to explore serious ethical questions.
Child deaths also play heavily into the plot of Showtime's "Homeland," which concludes its first season after the "Dexter" finale Sunday.

Freshman ethics classes love to pose questions about children in danger to explore the concept of utilitarianism ? the idea that the the right course of action is the one that brings about the most overall happiness and the least overall pain. Students are asked to ponder (and sometimes do, for the rest of their lives) whether they would let one child die to save a train full of people, or kill the infant Hitler if it would prevent the Holocaust.
Walt's "Breaking Bad" dilemma fits in cozily alongside those questions: Would you risk a child's life to save yourself and your family?
Shane's decision to kill the hunter in "The Walking Dead" is another utilitarian calculation brought on by child endangerment: He decides the hunter's life is worth less than his own, and that of the boy the hunter shot. The entire search for Sophia also comes down to a cold calculation: Should all the survivors risk their lives to look for one little girl?
Her discovery as a zombie in a barn leads to another ethical debate about who deserves our empathy. The survivors take a fairly strict us vs. them approach to zombies ? until the most vulnerable of "us" becomes one of "them."

Horror aficionado Eli Roth cleverly riffed on the no-killing-kids rule in his 2005 "Hostel," the extreme 2005 film that helped inspire the phrase "torture porn." The climax of the film includes a moment when a villain seems prepared to run over a pack of children. It seems like the most grueling possible coup de grace to a film filled with grotesqueries.
But ultimately Roth lets the kids win, by swarming their would-be killer. That's right: This is the year basic cable dramas crossed a line that "Hostel" wouldn't.
FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which also toys with audiences' boundaries, played with the no-harm to children rule this season in an episode in which a character pretended, for tax purposes, that her baby had died.

"I will say this," show creator Rob McElhenney told TheWrap in a recent interview. "That there has never been, nor will there ever be, a sitcom on television where they have a baby funeral. We're the only one."
The only sitcom, sure. But not the only show, the way things are going.
Do you feel the deaths of kids on TV shows this season has been more for shock value or to engage people in ethical discussions? Which death(s) didn't help the storyline? Share your thoughts on the Facebook page for our TV blog, The Clicker.

'Babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film,' Craig says, predicting the mature set will flock to theaters.
By Amy Wilkinson
Rape, murder, intrigue ... the feel-bad movie of Christmas may not leave audiences feeling bright and merry but "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" star Daniel Craig suspects the dark drama will inspire smiles among at least one group.
"Look, I'm a David Fincher fan, so it was an easy choice to make when accepting this film," Craig told MTV News at the film's New York City premiere. "It's a great story. It's an adult movie. The babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film. That's why I wanted to get involved."
The film, based on the novel by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson, follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) as he tries to solve the 30-year-old murder of teen Harriet Vanger, with the help of asocial hacker punk Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Mara has been earning raves for her performance as the damaged heroine and even netted a Golden Globe nomination on Thursday. Craig said he had no doubts as to the newcomer's abilities.
"We all knew she was good. She's just committed as an actress, and she made all of the right choices with David's help and everyone else's help," he said. "She's just blossomed as somebody. As I said, we knew from the beginning that she was good enough — it was everyone else who had the problem."
Best known for her work in Fincher's "The Social Network," Mara returned the compliment, expressing gratitude for Craig's help and guidance on set. "Daniel is an incredible actor, and I don't think we've seen him in a role like this before, and he's brilliant," she said. "I couldn't have asked for a better person to sort of have my coming out. He was very patient and generous with me."
"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" opens December 20, a day earlier than its initial release date.

Based off a yearly comparison study of 3,000 consumers conducted by Nielsen, video streaming on gaming consoles is on the rise while the number of people watching physical media is dropping. During 2010, ten percent of Xbox 360 owners watched video-on-demand or streaming services like Netflix through the Microsoft console. That number has climbed to 14 percent in 2011. In a similar trend on the PlayStation 3, nine percent of PS3 owners used the console to watch streaming content during 2010, but increased to 15 percent in 2011. The Nintendo Wii had the most significant growth spurt growing from a fifth of all users in 2010 to a third of all users in 2011.
Increased video streaming usage is likely due to wider availability of more streaming applications like Vudu and ESPN3 as well as increase reliance on streaming content from Netflix and Hulu Plus. Alternatively, physical media suffered on gaming consoles. Viewership of DVD or Blu-ray discs on the Xbox 360 fell by two percent and dropped by five percent on the PlayStation 3. However, total time spent on gaming consoles has increased by about seven percent over the previous year. In addition, time spent playing online games has increased by five percent on the Xbox 360. Sony?s PlayStation 3 saw a three percent drop in online gaming, but offline gaming increased by eight percent over 2010. Nintendo saw a slight drop in both offline and online gaming over the previous year.?
One aspect of console usage that dropped across all platforms was listening to music or utilizing the Internet. While all consoles had approximately 11 percent of users utilizing these services during 2010, that number had fallen to approximately four percent in 2011. When it comes to watching downloaded movies or television shows, there?s been very little change year over year. It?s likely that more people are subscribing to streaming content through monthly fees rather than spending money on individual video purchases.

While our shirt is still being pressed ahead of the launch event in London later today, yet more details have leaked on the LG Prada 3.0. Some decidedly realistic press shots have surfaced ahead of the phone's big debut, alongside some concrete-looking confirmed specifications. The dual-core OMAP 4430 processor seen last week is apparently clocked at 1GHz, with a high definition screen showing off a classy monotone Android skin, lying over Gingerbread version 2.3.7. The spec sheet also reveals 8GB of storage, expandable by microSD, with an eight megapixel auto-focus camera peering out from the textured backing. Interestingly, the slab with style will also pack NFC according to the leak. We've got a few more hours to wait until we can give it a personal going-over -- fashion phone obsessives, hold on.
Update: We've added the (Google-translated) press release after the break.

LONDON (Reuters) ? Mobile phone applications that allow online shopping on the move could give battered British retailers something to cheer about in what is otherwise set to be one of the toughest Christmas trading periods for years.
As the festive shopping season gets into full swing, demand for these mobile apps is growing fast, even though overall consumer purchasing is under severe pressure from high inflation, muted wage growth, fears over job security and government austerity measures.
"Mobile technology is changing the game this Christmas. The power is now well and truly in the hands of the consumer who will be dictating when, where and how they want to shop," said Natalie Berg of research group Planet Retail.
As the British sector becomes increasingly "multichannel," retailers such as Argos, Debenhams and ASOS are tapping into the growing popularity of mobile shopping in general and, in particular, mobile phone apps.
Research by IMRG, the British trade body for online retailers, found 24 percent of consumers have used their smartphone to access websites while out shopping.
It reckons Christmas 2011 will be the year when mobile shopping goes mainstream.
Its research found sales through mobile phones leapt from 0.4 percent of total sales at the beginning of 2010 to 3.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011, not least because retailers are increasingly embracing apps.
Apps offer convenience, allowing shoppers to shop virtually anywhere, and at anytime, from the palm of their hands.
"Within an app, consumers have greater control over setting their own preferences, so more personalization," said IMRG's Andy Mulcahy.
"Apps can be used offline and can utilize multiple mobile device capabilities, such as GPS, voice, camera, calendar and address book."
RAPID GROWTH
High street catalogue retailer Argos, owned by Home Retail, had a torrid first half to end-August with total sales slumping nearly 8 percent.
But the launch of a web platform for mobile devices and an app for Android phones, along with its existing Apple iPhone app, led to rapid growth of mobile shopping and at the end of the period the proportion of Argos' total sales from mobile shopping was about 4 percent, up from 1 percent a year ago.
"As we go into this Christmas I think that's going to continue to grow," said Home Retail Chief Executive Terry Duddy.
"I think it's potentially quite exciting. It suits our model (and) it clearly suits our customers who are shopping on the move. With the penetration of smartphones I think we're going to head towards a sort of double digit number some time or other."
ASOS, the fast-growing youth fashion Internet retailer, first launched ASOS mobile a year ago and in the summer added a range of apps for Apple mobile devices.
Currently some 10 percent of its traffic is through mobiles.
"I would be amazed if it (mobile shopping) wasn't between 20 and 30 percent of our sales within the next three to five years," said Chief Executive Nick Robertson, who plans to develop local language versions of ASOS's mobile sites and apps in the future to complement its local language websites.
Debenhams, Britain's second-largest department store group, sells its products through iPhone, iPad, Android and Nokia apps.
"It's very early days but we're evidently embracing new technology and new ways for people to shop because we see that as one of the growth strands going forward," said Chief Executive Michael Sharp.
